Riparian Forest Buffers

In 1998, 10,000 Years Institute scientists conducted an analysis of proposed forest practice rules for the state of Washington. One of the products of this analysis was a decision framework for determining riparian buffer widths for Washington streams necessary for maintaining ineam habitat for fish and other aquatic life. Recommendations were developed for both fish- and non fish-bearing streams to provide fully functional riparian forests over the long-term, minimizing the risk that continued degradation of riparian habitat will result in extinction of salmonids.
